I can tell you what my painting is not.

It is not a romantic interpretation. It is barely lyrical, although I like to think it has some poetry in it.

Do I get inspired by the Cornish landscape, the light? Well, yes and no. No, because I do not deal in figuration. Yes, because there are colours that I recognise in my works that reflect where I live.

The paintings have to be quiet. To allow space and pause. They are to be the unspoken, the unacknowledged, the secretive, the beauty of melancholy. They should add something to space but not with pattern or gesture.

The space

the open landscape

wind swept

the horizon

the space.

Edge and pause.

The moment between noise and silence.

The sound

the pause

the silence and space.

Please be aware of the paint.

The thick drag and pull across the surface.

The way the rough catches shadows.

Take the brush stroke to the edge but not all the way. Be aware of the edge and direction.

I am sorry that they may not be pretty enough.
